Pregnancy Style Tips

Managing to stay stylish during pregnancy is quite the challenge, and Project Runway’s Kristin Haskins-Simms is no stranger to being creative with her wardrobe. Kristin, the master behind the clothing label Strangefruit has provided her tips for how Mom’s to be can get celeb worthy style without breaking the bank.

Kristin's tips on how to dress your bump in style:

Wear Leather (or Faux)!
“ I know it sounds crazy but I find that when I wear a light leather motorcycle style jacket paired with black yoga pants, ballet flats, an elongated Tee to cover the belly and a scarf, I always get a double take. Sometimes I wear tights/leggings with knee high flat boots (2" and under) and wear one of my old tube-style dresses or skirts that have an elastic waistband. Pair this with a motorcycle and you are just as fab as the fashionistas. I also have leather wristlet accessories that I wear over a long sleeve tee. It's more of a statement but it garners attention as most don't think pregnant moms can or want to be fabulous. “

Accessorize!
“Yes you may have had a bad night's sleep with baby kicking at all times of the night, so If you are not feeling it, just make certain you have an amazing statement scarf. Even if you are wearing all black stretchy garments, throw on that scarf on with your hair slicked back and sunglasses, you'll look like Demi Moore. Maybe wear a hat, something with flair and color.”

Embrace the Belly!
“When you have hit 6 months, that belly is out there so why hide it? There are some great tops and dresses that have plenty of stretch and are more streamlined to hug your curves in all the right places- meaning they don't have a distinct empire waistline with pleating. Make certain the top or dress smoothly hugs your belly. But stick with solids if you want to be on the safe side. If it's a special occasion, show off that cleavage with a V-neck. Even if it isn't a special occasion, show it off anyway under you motorcycle jacket. Pregnancy is sexy and it rocks!”

Take your vitamins! “I'm not just referring to your prenatal or multi-vitamins. To enhance that pregnancy glow, I use Mario Badescu Vitamin C serum. Of course it depends on your skin type and how your skin is adjusting to your raging hormones. I just know that I have gotten so many compliments on my skin since I started using it combined with my natural pregnancy glow.”

Exercise! “I know you get tired  and morning sickness is the worst in the first trimester , but pregnancy doesn't give you license to lay around, eat everything and anything you want.  Even if you weren't big on working out or exercise before, life is about to change and you are going to need all the energy you have when that little one enters the world so  at least  walk 20-30 minutes a day.   I swim 3 times a week, lift light weights, prenatal yoga and hike as much as I can with our dog. I try to stay active all around despite my bad days and I'm 40! I can do it, anyone can.”

Balance the sweets! “Yes I eat more sweets now than ever but I balance it out with fruit and veggies, lots of water and diluted fruit juices. All fruit juices, contain a lot of sugar so it is best to dilute each glass on a 1 to 3 ratio. One third of your glass should be water while the rest is fruit juice which is a good balance and also a great way to help avoid gestational diabetes. If you already have been diagnosed, then your doctor will probably put you on a strict diet anyway.”

About Strangefruit

Strangefruit is a women’s ready to wear clothing line designed by Philadelphia innovator and former Project Runway contestant, Kristin Haskins-Simms. What started off as a T-shirt design company in 2006, has evolved into a line comprised of  statement pieces that are unique and distinguished.

After deconstructing her men’s inventory and transforming them into daring, bold women’s items, Kristin found her niche. Strangefruit was launched as a contemporary, ready-to-wear collection and has been breaking the mold ever since.

During the brand’s early years, Kristin paid homage to American History and culture through her designs. Today, Strangefruit is also inspired by historical periods and caters to the lives of busy women who want to be hassle-free yet fashion forward.

The release of her first collection was appropriately named The Regal Warrior, which was birthed by fusing Victorian era style with American military uniforms. Regal Warrior debuted during Philadelphia Fashion Week in October of 2009. Shortly after, Kristin was cast in Season 8 of Project Runway where the show’s host Tim Gunn, referred to her designs as “stunning”.
