On Thursday, June 16, 2011, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will unveil the singer's infamous raw-meat dress to the public. The dress - made of layers of Argentinian beef -was kept in a meat locker, placed in a vat of chemicals and then dried out by taxidermists in California before being transported to the museum.
"Well we were initially thinking that it would be dried," said Hall of Fame assistant curator Meredith Rutledge. "They discovered that they wouldn't be able to put it on a form after it dried so what they did was they soaked it some sort of toxic cocktail of chemicals including formaldehyde so that it was still pliable and put it on a dress form that was the same size as Gaga and then continued drying it in a controlled environment." Rutledge says the dress was painted to look "fresh" afterwards. The entire process took several months to complete.
The dress is being displayed as part of the "Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power" exhibit, which runs until February 2012. "Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power" highlights the flashpoints, the first, the best, the celebrated -- and sometimes lesser-known women -- who moved rock and roll music and American culture forward. The interactive exhibition spotlights more than 70 artists - including Tina Turner, Madonna, Taylor Swift and more - and fills two entire floors of the museum.
