Street Style: Jean Paul Gaultier

Set against a metallic brick wall, Gaultier’s Pre-Fall quickly established an urban mood, showing a series of looks imbued with tough attitude via slick black leather, slouchy menswear and chunky accessories. Bright fuchsia was a foil to shiny black, but the shade became aggressive as chunky fur trim and layered voluminous silk. After several Asian-inspired pieces, the presentation moved into a high-end take on streetwear; graphic t-shirts, baggy khakis, platform hi-tops, and embroidered jersey track pants, all while continuing to riff on oversized suiting. Though much of Pre-Fall was packed with swagger, the designer created interesting hybrids, like a feminine wrapped jersey dress with leather shoulders, or a nubby lambswool vest with nylon sleeves, innovations which elevated the collection from typical streetwear to runway material. —Nina Stotler, Stylesight
